New Book Boyfriend Alert: Why Play Along deserves a 5-Star Review and your heart!
No spoilers! Just vibes
Up for the tropes of accidentally married in Vegas? Golden Retriever? Stepbrothers’ rivalry? Sports romance? I could keep going…
I mean just read this:
“Just think of this as one big game”. His tone is low and deep when he leans down to my ear and whispers, “C’mon wife. Play Along” (Extract from the book, pg 58.)
*Sighs* Play Along is everything and more for a book lover like me who’s all about swoon-worthy characters and a strong female character that saves herself.
The Windy City Series by Liz Tomforde takes you along the journey of a group of superstar athletes from various sports falling in love with strong female characters.
They are all interconnected and make up the most wholesome found family!
While every book can be read as a standalone, why would you rob yourself of the chance to fangirl over every interaction the characters have?
Play Along follows the story of Isaiah and Kennedy. He is a professional baseball player, and she is the team’s athletic trainer.
He wanted her from the moment he saw her, she was just fighting to keep her job. All it takes is one night in Vegas, and everything changes — now they are married.
Sadly, they soon will realize that the saying “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” doesn’t apply to them.
Swoon-worthy moments
So, I don’t know if I’m biased because I have him fresh on my mind, but Isaiah, I’m in love.
We had some sneak peeks of the tension and longing in the third book of the series, Caught Up, that had us screaming for Isaiah’s story. Nothing like one-sided love to ramp up the angst. Isaiah worships her like no man’s business.
So let’s number them so I don’t get lost
- What better duo than a golden retriever paired with a female character who fights for what she wants? She’s no damsel in distress.
- Let’s not forget — it’s got that iconic trope from What Happens in Vegas: they get married in Vegas by drunken accident!
- If you are looking for spice, it’s got spice, and the best —we don’t see them jumping each other’s bones in the first chapter; what we do see is a gradual build-up of interest — at least from Kennedy’s perspective, because Isaiah was ready from the get-go.
- We have some mental health talks, which as a psychologist I’m always an advocate for. That’s not to say I ‘m not always wary of how they are going to approach it, but fear not — while it’s a light mention, they highlight the importance of seeking profesional help and the value of talking about your feelings in a safe environment.
- You can have flawed characters with tragic backstories and make them not toxic and that’s Isaiah and Kennedy. You can se the growth that they bring to each other’s lives, how they are each other’s cheerleaders. Just dreamy!
Warning! Be aware that it might just rob you of some hours of sleep, as it has a high binge-reading quality. The shadows under my eyes while I’m writing this can testify for that.
Conclusion? Live, laugh, loved it! It got me fangirling, tearing up, and fanning myself.
Can’t wait for Rio’s story!
